At the heart of the Camino de Santiago is a man — Saint James the Apostle, known in Spanish as Santiago. His life, his death, and the legend surrounding his remains have drawn pilgrims to the far edge of Spain for over a thousand years. But who was Saint James, and why does his story still matter today?
James the Apostle
James was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, and one of the inner circle — alongside his brother John and Simon Peter. In the Gospels, he is present at some of the most pivotal moments of Jesus’ ministry: the Transfiguration, the raising of Lazarus, and the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus gave James and John the nickname Boanerges — Sons of Thunder — a testament to their passionate, fiery faith.
The First Apostle Martyr
James holds a unique and sobering distinction: he was the first of the twelve apostles to be martyred for his faith. Around 44 AD, King Herod Agrippa I ordered his execution by sword — an event recorded in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 12:2). His willingness to die for his belief in the risen Christ made him a powerful symbol of faithful endurance.
The Legend of Santiago de Compostela
According to tradition, after his martyrdom in Jerusalem, the body of Saint James was miraculously transported by boat to the Iberian Peninsula — guided by angels and carried by his disciples. He was buried in what is now Galicia, in northwestern Spain. Centuries later, in the 9th century, his tomb was rediscovered — and the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela was built over the site.
Patron Saint of Spain
Saint James became the patron saint of Spain, and his symbol — the scallop shell — became the universal emblem of the pilgrim. The shell’s ridges, converging at a single point, represent the many routes of the Camino all leading to one destination: Santiago.
Why He Still Matters
For pilgrims walking the Camino today, Saint James represents more than history. He is a model of bold faith, sacrificial devotion, and the courage to follow Christ to the very end. Whether you walk the Camino for faith, for adventure, or for healing — you walk in the footsteps of a man who gave everything.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7
